Whenhe first time the Athletic striker featured in England, an 18-year-old playing for Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in September 2015, he scored. During his subsequent match he played in British turf, against Sunderland following that, he converted. The third time, against the Citizens six weeks after that, sure enough, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to face United at Leigh Sports Village in the 2017 season, he found the back of the net. An excellent finish, too. “Actually,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” So Athletic did what they had to do: they substituted him.
“I became very upset,” the forward reveals, then chuckling. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, you know how it is. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the usual talk. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at the club. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the facility, Bilbao, the early training is ready to commence; following that, the short journey to the airport and a further journey to Britain, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on midweek. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a challenging campaign for the club, partially owing to the requirements of being here. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in the continental stage. Yet, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.
In the three years since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, prevented from reaching a final at home by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway flanked by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.
He considered it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. As the child of the ex-La Real star his father and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that developed the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he went through a ACL injury, the cut, a drop in category and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of his career.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the first team but each step you go through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in six games between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I suffered the ACL injury.
“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as a turning point because it shifted the outlook. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I did the sessions and then go home, as a youngster does. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact countless occasions. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”
Game time is essential. He left upset in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. At Sabadell in 2020-21, he netted three goals in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, work, believe, and when eventually they need someone where you play, recall is possible. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. Especially after the prior campaign which, at times, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
